Manly was born in 1987 in Kortrijk where he obtained in 2009 a master in Industrial Science in Chemistry at the Provincial Industrial High School (PIH). At the PIH his compulsory courses were chemistry-oriented, his elective courses were in the field of electromechanics. Simultaneously he also studied at the firefighting school, where he obtained in 2007 the civil degree of firefighter. Afterwards he enlarged his focus to the world of Photonics. As a result he obtained in 2011 his master degree in Engineering in Photonics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Today he combines his both fields of academic expertise for his PhD research at VUB.

His PhD-research entitled Nanostructured size exclusion chromatography column with modular optical detection takes place both at the Brussels Photonics Team (B-PHOT) and the Chemical Engineering group (CHIS) of VUB.
