15 youngsters visit “Photonics Innovation Center”

During the summer, our Photonics Innovation Center (PIC) in Gooik welcomed 15 kids between the ages of 10 and 12. The trip was organised by ‘Sapikids’ (a contraction of sapiens and kids), a company which organises science and technology workshops for children. Sapikids is a member of the STEM academy, an initiative of the Flemish Government to promote science for children and teenagers up to 18 years.

Two sessions of the ‘Techni-week’ workshop were organised: one in the beginning of summer break, and one at the end of August. During these two weeks, 15 children in total learned how to solder and build electronic circuits. On top of that, they also had daily business visits. In this way children were able to get first-hand experience in the world of technology and science.

When Sapikids visited the PIC, the young scientists were immersed in the world of photonics. After a visit to the labs and the clean room, the children did some experiments themselves. They managed to set up a communication system through an optical fibre with three colours of LEDs, simulated how colours are made in the pixels of displays, were able to look through the eyes of a snake, and found out that white light consist of different colours.
