B-PHOT successfully organised  1st International Workshop on EMBEDDED OPTICAL SENSORS FOR COMPOSITE MATERIALS at Het Pand in Gent (Belgium). B-PHOT teamed up with the IWT-SBO project "Self Sensing Composites" (https://wiki.sirris.be/display/selfsensingcompositespublic/Home ), the COST TD 1001 action OFSeSA (www3.ul.ie/td1001/ ) and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (www.ugent.be/ea/dmse/en ) of the Universiteit Gent.

The workshop dealt with the latest developments in and applications of noveloptical sensors and optical sensor techniques for monitoring composite materials during their entire life cycle, from production to operation. The state-of-the-art was reviewed, outstanding issues were identified, a road mapping exercise for future research was started and new international collaborations were initiated.

The workshop was held on 7 and 8 October 2013 and featured 17 invited talks from top experts in the fields of composite materials and sensors, an interactive demonstration session and an exciting panel discussion. We welcomed 117 participants from 23 countries.
