FBGS teams up with B-PHOT VUB to commercialise fiber optic pressure sensor

November 21, 2013 at 09:54

FBGS  recently finalised an exclusive license agreement with the VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) for the commercialisation of an innovative pressure/temperature sensor within the Oil&Gas industry. The sensor, developed by B-PHOTVUB, is based on a Fiber Bragg Grating written inside a micro-structured glass fiber and can be considered as a breakthrough in sensing as it allows monitoring of pressure and temperature simultaneously. Additionally a bilateral project has been started between VUB and FBGS to further develop and optimise the technology.
A significant opportunity exists especially for down-hole sensing applications within oil and gas industries, as the sensor exhibits excellent performance under high pressure and temperature swings compared to electrical sensors. Other benefits include:

• No down-hole electronics required

• Intrinsically safe

• Immune to electromagnetic interference

• Operate at high temperatures (>180 °C)

• Very small form factor
