Successful PhD defense of B-PHOT researcher Fabian Duerr

On 17 May 2013, Fabian Duerr successfully defended his PhD thesis: New free-form optics design methods for solar concentrators and imaging applications. Promoters of the candidate were Prof. Dr. Ir. Hugo Thienpont and Prof. Dr. Ir. Youri Meuret. He was awarded the degree of Doctor in Engineering with greatest distinction and unanimous congratulations of the jury.

Summary of the PhD thesis: "New optical design strategies play a key role in unleashing the tremendous potential for innovative applications, offered by the rapid progress in free-form optics manufacturing. This evolution will encourage more and more optical designers to rethink their traditional approach to optical design by removing restrictions on surface geometry to develop increasingly compact yet better performing optical systems.
 
This PhD thesis contributes to advancing direct free-form optics design methods by introducing a new analytic design method. The capability and versatility of this new design method are demonstrated for both nonimaging and imaging optics:
 It is used to design a new tracking integrated solar concentrator system in which movement is introduced in the free-form design method. Furthermore, it can be shown that this new analytic design method bears great potential for imaging systems with high aspect ratio."
