After a successful workshop held at the DESY in Hamburg on 30th August 2011, the pilot field tests of the Photonics Explorer kit have now begun. The kit is being tested in seven European countries; Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom with the didactic material translated into the corresponding seven languages.

The Photonics Explorer kit provides enough experimental material for a class of 25-30 students to work hands-on in small groups. 48 prototypes have been distributed to Local Associated Partners in the participating countries. Over 1000 secondary students are expected to participate in testing the first prototypes of the Photonics Explorer kits. The field tests will span four months, between September and December 2011.

During the field tests the project partner IPN - Leibniz-Institut für die Pädagogik der Naturwissenschaften und Mathematik an der Universität Kiel will collect feedback for the scientific evaluation of the Photonics Explorer. This evaluation will help to determine the impact of the kit in the classroom and on the students.
