On September 21st, the photonics department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) welcomed a ten-person delegation from Beihang University (Beijing, China). The group, consisting of professors and PhD students, was in Brussels for a three-day visit.
A VUB delegation already visited Beihang University last year to discuss a possible collaboration in research and education. The initiative for this collaboration was taken by the International Relations Mobility Office and vice-rector of international relations Jan Cornelis.
During Beihang University’s three day visit, numerous activities and workshops were organised to familiarise our visitors with the research and activities from the photonics department at VUB/B-PHOT. Presentations by both universities were given, and possible collaboration areas discussed.
Other activities included a field trip to the Photonics Innovations Centre (PIC), where our visitors got to experience the innovative research that is being conducted in the field of photonics first-hand. This PIC, just outside Brussels, is a state-of-the-art research centre which houses high-tech equipment that enables scientists to create prototypes for business, from large to SMEs.
The third and last day was dedicated to B-PHOT’s exhibition in the Atomium: “Discover the power of light”. This exhibition is completely dedicated to the themes of light and lighting technology, and has proven to be a very successful way to engage people from every walk of life in the exciting field of photonics.
