February 9, 2016 at 11:27

Jasper Van Hoorick, joint PhD student between the Polymer Chemistry & Biomaterials Research Group at Ghent University and the Brussels Photonics Team of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, received the 2014 Agoria Award for Technological Dissertations for his Master thesis entitled ‘Tunable hydrogel-polyester combination scaffolds for tissue engineering purposes.’ This work focused on the development of new biocompatible materials and the construction of porous tissue carrier structures for intervertebral disc regeneration, to treat low back pain.

The Agoria Award consisted of 500 euro and an executive masterclass in enterpreneurial innovation at the Vlerick Business School. In honor of this year’s award ceremony, a short video was presented in which Jasper’s research, and life after the award was briefly presented. The video can be found here .

Recently, Jasper obtained a PhD research grant from the IWT to continue his PhD research in the field of tissue engineering, now focussing on the development of a subretinal implant for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration.
