M. Virte and M. Sciamanna (OPTEL and LMOPS, Supélec and University of Lorraine) and K. Panajotov and H. Thienpont (B-PHOT, Vrije Universiteit Brussel) report on the first laser diode that is intrinsically chaotic by simply varying its driving injection current and without applying any external perturbation or noise. The authors identified the chaotic behaviour in the polarization of the generated laser light and trace it back to the nonlinear coupling of carrier spins in surface-emitting lasers. This finding revolutionizes the 50 years knowledge of laser diode dynamics and paves the way towards new applications such as optical hardware random number generators and polarization chaos-based multiplexed optical cryptography.
