On 20 October 2014 B-PHOT welcomed 1050 students from 25 secondary schools on the campus of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel for an interactive show on photonics. During the event B-PHOT researchers showcased basic concepts of light and light technology as well as cutting-edge and real-life applications. As such the pupils were introduced to lasers for medical applications, LEDs for energy-efficient lighting, solar concentrators to generate electrical energy, optical labs-on-chip with applications in medical diagnosis and food quality, optical fiber communication, and 3-dimensional displays. All topics were presented in a visually attractive manner and pupils were invited to participate in the demonstrations on stage followed by a live quiz. The 5 best pupils were rewarded with nice prizes. The B-PHOT team received an overwhelming applause at the end of the show from both pupils and teachers as a token of their appreciation. B-PHOT will organize its photonics science shows again in 2015 in the framework of the International Year of Light and Light Technology .
