B-Phot excites and fascinates secondary school students with an interactive photonics science show

November 23, 2010 at 20:21

During this year's science week the B-Phot team introduced secondary school students to photonics technologies. During a dynamic and fascinating show B-Phot engineers and scientists explained to 400 students and their accompanying teachers how lasers work, how light can be guided in an optical fiber to transfer huge amounts of information, how flat panel displays work, how a blue ray disc can be used to store gigantic amounts of data, how the infrared signature of a human being can be detected by a camera and save its life, and how optical sensors can be used to give robots the sense of feeling.

These and many more questions are answered during this exciting, spectacular and educational show.

With this outreach activity B-Phot aims at contributing to inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers who will apply the power of light to innovate products and create jobs in Europe.
