In the recently published list of granted fellowships of the FWO (Flemish Research Foundation), Dr. Ir. Thomas Geernaert from the Brussels Photonics Team (B-PHOT) was officially awarded with a 'FWO Postdoctoraal Onderzoeker' fellowship for the next 3 years. In total there were 163 laureates spread over all universities and research disciplines in Flanders who received a first FWO PostDoc mandate this year.
Thomas Geernaert is member of the Micro-structured Fibres group within B-PHOT. The research project that he will be focusing on in the coming years is entitled “Paradigm shifting optical fiber sensors for axial strain monitoring with silica and polymer photonic crystal fibers” In this project he will design and develop an optical fiber sensor for temperature-insensitive axial strain measurements and improve the repeatability of micro- and nanomachining with femtosecond lasers in silica and polymer photonic crystal fibers (PCFs). This research topic has the support of several highly qualified European partners for which the collaboration was already initiated during Thomas’s PhD.
