Nathalie Vermeulen receives the international Photonics21 Student Innovation Award

Nathalie Vermeulen from Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) receives the international Photonics21 Student Innovation Award for her research contributions on silicon-based light sources

At the international photonics symposium “Photonics Europe 2010” organized by the International Society for Optical Engineering SPIE in Brussels, Dr. Ir. Nathalie Vermeulen was honored with the prestigious Photonics21 Student Innovation Award. Nathalie Vermeulen, who currently works as a Post-Doc researcher in the Brussels Photonics Team (B-PHOT) at the VUB-department IR-TONA chaired by Prof. Hugo Thienpont, received this award as recognition for her “outstanding research contribution” in the domain of silicon-based light sources and for the impact of her research on photonics industry. Among the numerous applicants, there were two winners. Upon receipt of the award, Dr. Vermeulen offered these comments: “The great value of this Student Innovation competition is the connection of scientific research to real-life applications. Being selected as a winner is a great honor for me.”
