The EXPEKT team is glad to announce the completion of the Photonics Explorer kit for Europe wide field tests.
The Photonics Explorer kit consists of a class-set of experimental material within a didactic framework. The material comprises eight educational modules dealing with light and optics designed for lower and upper secondary students, such that it can integrate into European school curricula and complement existing curriculum. The didactic content has been developed in conjunction with over 30 teachers and science education professors from 10 European countries. The kit has now been translated into seven European languages and is ready for field tests.
The first workshop of the Photonics Explorer will be held on 30th August 2010 at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, Germany. The workshop will bring together the larger EXPEKT team including teachers, teacher trainers, key stakeholders in the European Photonics community and the developer team of EXPEKT. The first prototypes of the kit will be unveiled at this workshop and distributed to representatives of the Local Associated Partners from each of the seven test countries. Following the workshop, the Photonics Explorer will be tested, in the local language, in Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom with 50 pilot schools and over 1500 students.
The EXPEKT project is funded by the 7th Framework Program of the European Commission and the developer team consists of two post-docs of the Brussels Photonics Team (B-PHOT) based at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The project is co-ordinated by Prof. Hugo Thienpont and the consortium also includes partners at the IPN - Leibniz-institut für die Pedagogik der Naturwissenschaften an der Universtat Keil who will scientifically evaluate the impact of the Photonics Explorer in the classroom.
