Researchers are very rarely seen as social creatures and research departments, though very productive, often lack the social fabric found in departments filled with more conventional human beings. The student chapter board (this year consisting of Diane De Coster, Ben De Pauw, Tom Verschooten and Stefaan Heyvaert), with the help of SPIE and its faculty advisor Prof. Hugo Thienpont, tries to bring a social aspect to the life of the photonics MSc and PhD students of the VUB with ‘social’ meaning both (non-work related) fun as well as community oriented (or outreach).
To entice the MSc and PhD students to become/stay a member of the student chapter, the SPIE student chapter board organized a lunch on Friday 19 October with on the menu a dietary staple of students everywhere: free pizza. And since it is common knowledge that a researcher’s allegiance can be bought with free food, the student chapter now proudly boasts 34 student members making it the largest chapter in the Benelux and one of the largest in Europe.
People interested in joining are welcome to contact Diane, Ben, Tom or Stefaan. Updates about the student chapter activities will be communicated via firstname.lastname@example.org , so keep an eye out for mails from this address.
