The Marie Sklodowska Curie Action - Innovative Training Network FINESSE organizes its first training event from 6 to 9 June at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. This Spring School welcomes both ITN FINESSES Early Stage Researchers (ESR) and young professionals during a four day Ph.D. level training about the Fundamentals of Optical Sensors.
The participants will learn about the properties of light and optical signals through specialised lectures delivered by experienced academics and industrials. The importance and impact of Photonics – the science and technology of light – on our economy and society and entrepreneurship-related topics such as intellectual property right protection are covered as well.
The Spring School is one of five training events within the programme that will treat all the important topics related to distributed optical fibre based sensing supplemented with transverse activities related to transferable skills including teamwork in large projects.
About the FINESSE project
FINESSE (FIbre NErvous Sensing SystEms) aims to mimic the nervous system of living bodies by equipping man-made and natural structures with a set of disruptive new optical fibre based ‘artificial nervous systems’ that are sensitive to external stimuli.Advanced distributed fibre-optic sensor technology enables making these structures responsive to their environment and monitoring their health, which allows delivering early warnings in case of possible danger or damage, and optimizing the sustainable use of natural resources and assets, with the aim to achieve a safer, more secure and energy efficient Europe. To turn this ambitious concept into reality, 26 European universities, research centers and industrial partners have teamed up to set up the FINESSE Innovative Training Network, educating and training 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs).
