The Brussels Photonics Team B-PHOT of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel , under the leadership of Prof. Hugo Thienpont, has been active in the field of micro-miniaturized photonics for 25 years. During this time B-PHOT has succeeded in raising a considerable portfolio of funded research projects. Carefully planned investment and adequate management strategy allowed B-PHOT to successfully build expertise in micro-photonics and to set up unique technology platforms and infrastructure to support the micro-systems supply chain. With its micro-optical design platform, its cyclotron based deep-proton writing, and its large-scale micro-optical measurement centre in clean room conditions B-PHOT is currently among the world-leaders in optical modelling, optical characterization, low-cost rapid prototyping, and proof-of-concept demonstration of micro-optical modules and micro-photonic systems. B-PHOT has collaboration agreements in fundamental, strategic, applied and industrial research with top-level research groups in Europe, in the United States, Australia, and Asia, and with companies in Flanders, Europe, Asia, Japan, and the US.
B-PHOT is recognized for its achievements by the Flemish government with the highest level Methusalem and Hercules research and infrastructure grants.
At the European Community level B-PHOT is coordinating several large scale initiatives such as the Network of Excellence on Micro-Optics "NEMO" and the outreach program in photonics for secondary school students "EXPEKT".
B-PHOT is also recognized as key-focal point for industrial valorization by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel for its technology transfer to industry
B-PHOT counts 40 experts in photonics and 10 technical staff members.
