Although the theory for generating 3D images exists already for a long time, it is only due to the important progress in the domain of image modulators, optical and micro-optical components, electronics and image processing, that different 3D image acquisition and display systems are becoming feasible today. Yet, there are still many fundamental and technological issues which have to be solved.
The resolution, viewing angle and depth of focus of 3D displays should be improved considerably and there are diverse problems regarding the necessary bandwidth to make operation in real-time possible. Furthermore, it is clear that the image quality of 3D displays should be comparable with the image quality of the current 2D displays. Yet, 3D
display systems will only break through to a wide variety of application domains such as medical imaging, entertainment, communication, metrology, prototype visualisation and e-commerce, if the already mentioned requirements are fulfilled with a relatively compact and cheap system.
With this project, the research teams the Brussels Photonics Team ( B-Phot) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and TFCG Microsystems Lab at Ghent University are trying to make an important contribution to the development of compact multiview systems. Such displays should be able to create four-dimensional light fields with a large spatial and angular resolution and of which the image quality is comparable with the specifications of the current 2D displays. We want to achieve this by combining LED illumination, LCOS panels and innovative micro-optical structures. The combined technologies are active research domains for the improvement of 2D displays in which the participating teams have already gained a lot of expertise.
