Experimental demonstration of lasing action and intrinsic CARS-based heat mitigation in near-infrared and mid-infrared silicon Raman lasers

Since several years silicon is being considered as a very important photonic material. For example, in 2004 one has succeeded in demonstrating an efficient silicon-based laser, the lasing mechanism of which relies on "stimulated Stokes Raman scattering". Since these so-called silicon Raman lasers can generate both near-infrared and mid-infrared radiation, their application potentialities are very broad. So far I have mainly carried out theoretical research on this category of light sources. On one hand I have developed a highly-performing modeling method which has enabled me to numerically simulate the operation characteristics of near-infrared and mid-infrared silicon Raman lasers. On the other hand I have conceptualized for these lasers an intrinsic heat mitigation mechanism, that further enhances the integration possibilities for these devices. The goal of this project is to experimentally demonstrate my theoretical research results. More specifically, I would like to build a setup that allows experimentally investigating different silicon Raman laser devices. The project funding will be used to purchase two instruments for this setup, namely a mid-infrared spectrometer and a thermographic camera. The remaining equipment needed for these experimental investigations will be financed by our research department TONA-VUB.
