HPVLEDD: High visual performance LED displays

In the framework of this IWT-BARCO project it is the intention to create a new visual standard for the next generation of high-resolution LED walls. For this, diverse innovative technologies will be investigated to improve the image quality specifications drastically in comparison with the current state-of-the-art: contrast ratio, luminance and colour uniformity, fill factor and a faithful color reproduction. Apart from this, diverse mechanical, acoustical and data-processing aspects will be investigated. The department of Applied Physics and Photonics (TONA) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) are within this project responsible for the investigation of the contrast ratio and the image fill factor. Their contribution will consist of the modeling, design and characterization of diverse optical architectures which improve these optical specifications. Furthermore, several micro-optical components will be designed and fabricated which have the potential to considerably improve the total image quality.
