Novel Optical and Photonic Techniques for the next generation sorting machines

This industrial related research project concerns the collaboration between the Flemish company Best a leading company in the production of high technological (optical) sorting machines - and B-Phot ( TONA) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Prof. H. Thienpont and Dr. W. Meulebroeck). In this project we distinguish three parts. In a first part we study the optimal sorting principle (absorption, reflection, fluorescence, molecular vibrations,) for two different sorting applications: the identification of different plastic types and the identification of stone fragments in fruits. In the second part we concentrate on a possible implementation of photonic crystal fibers in optical sorting machines. In the third part we focus on the redesign of the optical part of the machines. This project is funded by het Instituut voor de aanmoediging van Innovatie door Wetenschap en Technologie in Vlaanderen (IWT).
