The study of ancient glasses and paintings.

The study of ancient glasses and paintings.

This reasearch topic aims at the investigation of archaeological glasses, the restoration of old paintings and the authentication of historic stained glass windows. The latter activity is in close collaboration with the SKAR/MARI Art Sciences and Archaeology group and the MACH/SURF Materials and Chemistry group of the VUB.

The main objectives are:

* To investigate how optical spectroscopy can contribute to the study of ancient glasses. This research is done in the framework of a so-called horizontal research action (HOA15) funded by the VUB.

* To develop hand-held, low-cost instrumentation to allow trained people to perform in-situ measurements.

* To present optical spectroscopy as an archaeometric measurement tool to archaeologists. This is done in the framework of the Marie-Curie training programme 'Narnia'.
