Unique approach for measuring nuclear fuel assembly vibrations exploits FBGS InternationaL's Draw Tower Technology

Support of innovative research activities are key in view of ensuring the safety of future particle accelerator driven nuclear systems. As part of the large-scale pan-European Research and Innovation Action MYRTE - MYRRHA Research and Transmutation Endeavour - within the European H2020 program, B-PHOT has demonstrated how FBGS's draw-tower grating (DTG®) based sensors can be applied to obtain nuclear fuel assembly vibration characteristics. Those are important to assess potential failure modes related to mechanical wear, such as fretting or mechanical fatigue. 

More precisely, B-PHOT has successfully developed the measurement system enabling the monitoring of a real-scale fuel assembly mock-up for the future MYRRHA  large multipurpose irradiation facility, in collaboration with the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK•CEN). This result of this research work has been published in MDPI Applied Sciences  and is now an International news highlight on the FBGS website
