Prof. Yunfeng Nie from B‑PHOT is awarded Rising Star in Optics 2024

As part of its 25th Anniversary celebrations, the Journal of Optics presented the Rising Stars in Optics initiative. This programme has been designed to honour outstanding early-career academics and industry professionals who are making significant contributions in optics.

Professor Yunfeng Nie from Brussels Photonics, VUB, was among the young researchers awarded the prestigious Rising Star in Optics 2024 title in recognition of her exceptional early-career contributions to research, education, and outreach.

Upon receiving the news, Prof. Nie expressed her gratitude and excitement. She is highly enthusiastic about future challenges in the field of optics and looks forward to continuing her work.

Research Field: Computational Optics

Dr. Yunfeng Nie is a Research Professor at Brussels Photonics, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, specializing in freeform optics and computational imaging. Active in the field of optics since 2012, she began her career working on hyperspectral imagers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), laying the foundation for her current research in AI-driven, physics-aware optical design. She earned her PhD in 2018 under the EU Marie Curie Fellowship, focusing on freeform optics.

Dr. Nie has contributed to numerous research projects in ultrashort projection and biomedical optics, collaborating with international partners in Spain, Germany, Finland, and beyond. She has authored over 30 peer-reviewed papers and delivered more than 10 presentations at international conferences.
